in Toronto

I am a Haitian student in Toronto and when the earthquake struck, I was in economics class. A friend of mine received a call that an earthquake had struck in the capital. My friend who is also Haitian and I were shocked and frantically began to call back home or send text messages and emails. We could not get through and we both began to panic. I left class early and from there I continued to try calling Haiti. However, I was unsuccessful, I began calling my family in Montreal and in Miami to see if they had heard from my parents, siblings, aunts/uncles and cousins. My aunt in MTL reassured me by telling me that they had heard from my mom but I still had no news of my father and brother and other family members. It took a couple of days until I heard from all of my immediate family. It was a relief when I spoke to them and they told me that they were all okay. I feel very blessed that my family is safe because I know that many other people did not have so much luck.
